Active Sun and Heat; Don't Gamble on the Weather

Tomer Tamarkin

From Dr. Peter Stallinga:

For everybody following the mainstream news, especially about the weather.

Currently we have the combination of a very active Sun and a very strong El Niño, both contributing to a relatively warm summer in Europe and America. It should also be noted that this is the last solar cycle with high activity, the Sun will go to sleep for a while. Thus, this warm weather is a foreboding of a mini ice age awaiting ....

Yet, to show you how difficult climate prediction is, this solar cycle is much bigger than expected (see image). And also El Niños and La Niñas are not predictable.

If people tell you they predict the climate, protect your wallet, you are beinMay be an image of text that says '150 ISES Sunspot Number: 2002 2023 You are here 100 ----.---...--...-.1 years official forecast uncertainty actual data 50 June 2023 Cycle 23 July 2025 2004 2006 2008 Solar Cyçle 24 2010 2012 2014 2016 2018 2020 Solar Cycle 25 2022 2024 2026 2028'g swindled.

1 Yogi Berra, the Great American Philosopher, nailed it when he said "Predicting is difficult -- especially about the future."

2 Berra was a man of great perception and mangled tongue.

He's a hero here in St. Louis. He grew up on "The HIll" (formerly known as Dago Hill) the Italian American neighborhood here. I often eat at the restaurants there and sit where Yogi and many other great players like Joe Garagiola sat and enjoyed fine Italian cooking.

The Hill is the largest Little Italy left, much bigger than New York's.

At any rate Yogi was  a true philosopher, no question.

He was being nagged about swinging at unhittable pitches once. The batting coach said "think!" So Yogi went to the plate and struck out "how the hell can you think and hit at the same time!"  You gotta admire a guy like that.

3 You certainly do. It sometimes takes more than a bit of time to figure out what he was talking about, but it's worth it.

One of my favorite "Yogi-isms" is "In theory, there's no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is." Spot-on, man!

5 There have been many truly wise people whose wisdom does not always flow trippingly from the tongue. And on the other hand, there have been many un-wise people who have been thought to be wise, or at least smart, basically because their "stuff" appealed to those on the left who liked their glib crap. I'm thinking at the moment of two-time loser Adlai Stevenson. I'd have been glad to shut the door on him in order to sit at the feet of Yogi. And if I'm not mistaken, there's at least one book out there dedicated to Yogi's wisdom. Can't say I've heard that Stevenson has one praising him.

6 Yeah; Stevenson is a classic example of golden tongue and lead brain.

Obama is another, though perhaps smarter than Stevenson (not at all wiser though).

Wisdom and intelligence and eloquence are three distinct things. Some may have all three, but often a person has one or two at the most. Yogi certainly had two.
