Yale Finds HR People Won't Hire Ill Spoken

Timothy Birdnow

From the Captain Obvious department:

Yale study shows class bias in hiring based on few seconds of speech

Naturally; a person who comes in speaking like a gangsta rapper or like someone who just came from a speakeasy in West Virginia is likely not going to be a good candidate for management. If nothing else it suggests they don't know how to learn the etiquette for professional culture. This is just another way to promote the idea of compulsory hiring of those not really qualified as part of affirmative action schemes. It's the same reasoning applied to college admissions of those not ready for top flight schools.

How is an interviewer supposed to judge an applicant? Why bother having an interview at all then?

Duhhhh....

1 Reminds me of a story I heard on the radio about 49 years ago (hey, doesn't everything?) when Air France established service in (probably) Atlanta. They worked very hard to find qualified people, including phone answerers. The story I heard was that they finally trained this one Georgia Peach to answer the phone with the proper Gallic "Bonjour, Air France," etc. And then the trainer went to another phone and called in. The girl picked up the phone and said "Bonjour, Air France. Kin Ah hep yew?"

Y'all can take the girl out of the country, but. . .

Shouldn't matter. My wife's youngest sister, born in central New York State, married a Georgia policeman and picked up the accent and it's stayed with her. Doesn't mean she's "slow" because she sure isn't. Neither, for that matter, is he!

2 Yep; it's the way that it is. I am often told I have an accent by you Yankees up north thar, Dana.

And my oldest brother has been living in Kentucky for years now and he's starting to sound like a good ole' boy. It happens.

Of course there's a difference between an accent and ignorance. Calling a person an M-F on the work phone isn't cricket at all...

4 Yep. Now, Martha and I still have our "middle Western New York State" accents, that we were born with, which to us are totally neutral. We don't sound like Yankees, who are from Massachusetts (ugh) or Bahs-tin (which isn't exactly the same thing). Or Connect-i-cut. Even worse, Maine, where they still sound like they're from someplace in rural Great Britain. WE think we speak English as it was meant to be spoken. And so does Jack Kemp.

On moving to Minnesota, for the fun of it we learned to put on a few of the things they use here, like "Yah, you betcha," and dragging out the "Minne-sooooota." And if I tell an Ole and Lena joke I can do it pretty idiomatically. When we moved here, my daughter, who already lived here, bought us a copy of "How To Talk Minnesotan," which is a lot of fun. But nobody back east would peg us for Minnesotans.

5 Yeah Dana; you don't have an accent and neither does Jack.

Minnesoooooooooooota is rather like a province of Sweden in regards to their accents. Even the Canadians sound more American.

Don't know I've ever heard a Mainer speak. I've heard plenty of Bostonians, and other New Englanders.

I've spent more time in the South than up yonder way, so I know the Southern accents pretty well. There's a definite difference between, say, a Georgian and a Texan. And I would say at least here in St. Louis we have no accent (but people up north think we do.)
