Thoughts on the Baldwin Shooting

Timothy Birdnow

A few quick thoughts on the Baldwin shooting.

Even if Baldwin isn't guilty of reckless homicide he's still guilty of endangerment. And his prop master must face criminal charges.

But no doubt they will let him off and declare it "an accident". Well, did they let Derrick Chauvin off for accidentally killing George Floyd? Baldwin should face the same sentence as Chauvin.

Baldwin is a huge gun control guy. So why was he playing with a weapon when he believes they should be taken away from people?

BTW Baldwin called for Dick Cheney to be sent up the river when he accidentally shot a guy while bird hunting. Will he apply the same standard to himself now?

1 I daresay Baldwin isn't thinking too clearly right now. In his shoes, I wouldn't be. However, since the whole movie seems to have been proceeding basically under his control -- including the cost-cutting -- he's ultimately responsible for things like this even if he didn't intend to cause harm. As I said in another article about this, I'm thinking "criminally negligent homicide." Though as I also said, I'm not a lawyer, nor do I play one on TV.

Dare we hope he learns anything positive from this experience? Like, "people who handle guns should know what they're doing?" People who drive cars have to know how to drive.

3 Exactly Dana; my thoughts too.

Ultimately Baldwin was the guy in charge. It was his project, so it is his 'nads in the nut cracker.

I agree; negligent homicide seems a likely charge. Not sure what NM state law defines it as, but I would imagine that would fit.

4 There are a number of articles on Fox News's site today, including this one that says that Baldwin was very careful about handling the guns. https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/alec-baldwin-very-careful-prop-guns-rust-accidental-shooting

In the other articles, the lion's share of the blame goes to Assistant Director Dave Halls, who handed the gun to Baldwin and said it was "cold" when it was actually "hot." Halls comes under criticism for a number of things, and there had been three other "gun incidents" on the set already, which apparently are not being blamed on the inexperienced armorer. Halls' ass should be in a sling as much as, and maybe more than, Baldwin's.

5 Latest word is that some of the crew were out "plinking" with that very same gun. Easy to see they didn't properly unload it.

Man, the facts keep coming out; before we know it, everybody on the set will be culpable one way or another.

6 Here's the link that confirms my statements above: https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/gun-killed-halyna-hutchins-leisure-shooting-morning-accident

Man, I wouldn't have wanted to work on that movie set for all the moolah in Hollywood!

7 And now the inexperienced armorer is getting more black eyes. https://news.yahoo.com/inexperienced-rust-armorer-enraged-nicolas-222821834.html

I'm starting to thing of Casey Stengel when he first became the manager for the NY Mets: "Can't anybody here play this game?" (Though there were those who said that with Stengel's poor grammar, he probably said "Can't anybody play this-here game?") No matter. The principal is the same.

8 It does look like a high school production sans faculty advisers. The set seems to have been out of control Dana.

I feel kind of sorry for the armorer. She is finished.
