Dems Want to Ditch the Filibuster

Timothy Birdnow

The Democrats are now trying to end the filibuster, and are claiming the GOP wouldn't pause in so doing were they in power.

Ri-ignt.

If you recall when Harry Reid was Senate Minority Leader he blocked a majority of President Bush's judges from confirmation hearings. At the time a lot of Conservatives argued for the "nuclear option" and eliminating the filibuster for judges. Didn't happen; the Republicans in the Senate refused to consider that idea because they figured they would need it some time in the future.

Well, when they did, when they were in the minority Mr. Reid abolished the filibuster for judges so he could get Barack Hussein Obama's in place.

Mitch McConnell, to my surprise, did not reimpose it when the GOP held the reins, but he did not get rid of it for other things.

Now the Democrats are coming along, trying to pass a multi-trillion dollar slush fund and a federal takeover of elections and they are claiming the GOP would not hesitate in doing this.

As Jackie Gleason would say "Hardy, Har, Har, Har!"

As the article points out, Donald Trump asked McConnell to ditch the filibuster to no avail.

The Democrats are monsters of hypocrisy and projection.

1 There's a very good reason for the filibuster to exist -- even in its currently emasculated form -- it used to be Senators had to take the floor and keep it, sometimes for hours -- this in the days before Depends. It may have seemed like a circus trick, but we'll probably never be able to calculate the number of terrible bills the filibuster prevented from becoming law.

3 Agreed Dana. The Senate is the "saucer" to cool passions, as they say. And that means the filibuster restrains unnecessary laws. The House is the passionate side, the Senate not so much. That was why the Senate was appointed and not elected, too. Direct election of Senators was a terrible idea, upsetting the careful balance put in place.

The filibuster was designed for just such circumstances as this; a demogogue and a slim party majority could, without the filibuster, run roughshod over the opposition and all who voted for them. That's why it exists.

4 It's not often appreciated or perhaps even understood, but the Founders designed a government that would work slowly. Our system is more cumbersome than a parliamentary system, and thank goodness for that! It's supposed to be cumbersome. And it's not supposed to be as huge as it is now! The Founders would be horrified at the size and power of the federal government.
