Arguing with Idiots: Trump Derangement Issue

Timothy Birdnow

On Facebook I eviscerate a halfwit.

Mike McCready, explaining why he hates Donald Trump, stated:

I'll take it upon myself to break up the echo-chamber-ness of it. Instead of inspiring us forward with a vision for the country, like Reagan did (despite the MAGA slogan), Trump tapped into the grievances of Americans who have felt shafted for many years. Grievance politics has always had its place and I know there are a lot of people who rightfully feel shafted. But he also easily (and I think wrongfully) convinced a lot of low-information voters that they should feel aggrieved when maybe they shouldn't have. I hear so many in the MAGA crowd who do not understand how the world works (as in the book "The World" by Richard Haas). That leaves them susceptible to buying into conspiracy theories and general nuttiness. A lot of what Sherrie posts on her page are grievances. Step one, wake up every day and decide what to be mad about. "Even Biden's presence at Ground Zero makes me angry", for example. I get it. Trump did things every day that made me angry, or embarrassed. Sometimes I posted about them too.

I reply:

"I get my news from US and foreign western sources who have no political agenda in their US political coverage"

Who pray tell is that?

There are no unbiased American sources at all and few in Europe. I notice you don't say who you listen to - that's because we would probably howl with laughter at claims they are unbiased. We do not have journalism any longer and haven't had it for a long time. It has been dying since Walter Cronkite (the man who declared the Vietnam War lost after the Tet Offensive - something the Vietcong openly admit was a disaster for THEM.)

"I hear so many in the MAGA crowd who do not understand how the world works " Hardy har, har har! You are the people who think men can put on panty hose and become women, or that the terrorists just need a big hug because they are mad we are so mean. It is people such as yourself who think a cloth mask will stop a virus, or that a single molecule added to every ten thousand molecules of air is going to doom us all, but WE don't understand how the world works?!

Mike adds:

Here is a list of some of Trump’s personal failings during his presidency that I found reprehensible. Some of them, on their own, should disqualify him from receiving the vote of most reasonable people.

I have a list of policy disagreements too.

Lied nearly 30,000 times

Ejected reporters from the White House briefing room who asked tough questions

Refused to release his tax returns

Called veterans and soldiers who died in combat losers and suckers

Coddled the leader of Saudi Arabia after he ordered the execution and dismembering of a US-based journalist

Refused to concede the 2020 election

Walked out of an interview with Lesley Stahl,

Called neo-Nazis "very fine people,”

Said idiotic things related to Covid in press briefings.

Incited anti-lockdown protestors in several states at the height of the pandemic

Insulted his own Cabinet members on Twitter

Claimed that he single handedly brought back the phrase "Merry Christmas” even though it hadn’t gone anywhere,

Forced his Cabinet members to praise him publicly like some cult leader,

Believed he should be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize

Berated and belittled his hand-picked Attorney General when he recused himself from the Russia probe

Repeatedly called the media "enemies of the people,”

Insulted various members of Congress and the media with infantile nicknames

Falsely claimed that he won the 2016 popular vote,

Called the Muslim mayor of London a "stone cold loser"

Falsely claimed that he turned down being Time’s Man of the Year

Mocked wearing face masks to guard against transmitting COVID

Forced his press secretary to claim without merit that his was the largest inauguration crowd in history,

Constantly interrupted Joe Biden in their first presidential debate

Refused to attend his successors’ inauguration,

Seemed to demonstrate a belief that there were airports during the American Revolution

Had a Secretary of State who called him a moron,

Thought that Nambia was a country,

Called his exceedingly faithful vice president a "pussy” for following the Constitution,

Insulted war hero John McCain - even after his death,

Spent an obscene amount of time playing golf after criticizing Barack Obama for playing (far less) golf while president

Ignored or didn’t even take part in daily intelligence briefings

Seemed to believe that Frederick Douglass is still alive

Stared directly into an eclipse even though everyone over the age of 5 knows not to do that

Called himself a very stable genius despite significant evidence to the contrary

used his Twitter account to blast Nordstrom when it stopped selling Ivanka’s merchandise

Continued lying about spending lots of time at Ground Zero with 9/11 responders

Retweeted a gif calling Biden a pedophile

Struggled navigating a ramp after claiming his opponent was feeble

I retort:

Mike McCready

Your entire list (which you pulled off the internet - I've seen this exact list on a number of liberal websites) sloshes between dubious at best and outright lies.

"Lied nearly 30,000 times "

Prove that. You can't cite the list of proven lies.

"Ejected reporters from the White House briefing room who asked tough questions"

No, he ejected a reporter who was shouting at him in violation of all decorum and demanding the time that belonged to other journalists.

"Refused to release his tax returns"

First, he was under zero legal obligation to do so. Second, as he was under audit (as he explained) he couldn't do so without violating a court order. You know that.

"Called veterans and soldiers who died in combat losers and suckers"

No he did not. https://nypost.com/2020/09/08/us-ambassador-to-france-says-trump-never-called-war-veterans-losers/

"
Coddled the leader of Saudi Arabia after he ordered the execution and dismembering of a US-based journalist"

What exactly do you mean by coddled? We have no power over them. If by coddled you mean he didn't cut America's nose off to spite our own faces well no. Biden came in with an attitude about that business and the Saudis cut oil production in response, driving gas prices up. I guess you prefer high gasoline prices to quiet diplomacy.

"Refused to concede the 2020 election"

Well, he didn't lose it so why should he concede? It was stolen, or at least the Democrats gave it the old college try. Even if you don't believe he still was following the lead of the Democrats. Hillary refused to concede the '16 election (and there was violent riots all over D.C. on Trump's inaugural.) Down in Georgia you had Stacy Abrams refuse to concede the Senate race she lost. But now it's uniquely Trumpian? I wouldn't have conceded it either; there was a lot of evidence of fraud.

"Walked out of an interview with Lesley Stahl,"

Yes he did and with good reason. https://pjmedia.com/election/tyler-o-neil/2020/10/22/now-we-know-why-trump-decided-to-air-the-leslie-stahl-interview-before-60-minutes-n1078520

Only an idiot will allow the media to muzzle him in an interview and twist things. Mr. Trump did the correct thing here. But you don't care about that, do you?

"Called neo-Nazis "very fine people,”'

That is a bald-faced lie. Trump was speaking about the protest in Charlottesville, which was a protest over the removal of Civil War statues. It was NOT a neo-Nazi rally. Trump observed that there were many fine people there from both sides, but that there were Nazis and Communists who infiltrated it. You know better; that is disgraceful that you would make so scurrilous a claim.

You lose all respect from me here.

Still, let us continue:

"Said idiotic things related to Covid in press briefings."

Such as? And do you know the difference between jokes and serious claims? I rather suspect not.

Oh, I guess saying the use of ultraviolet to kill viruses was ridiculous, eh? Not that they aren't doing that now or anything...

"Incited anti-lockdown protestors in several states at the height of the pandemic"

Prove that. Mr. Trump was giving daily briefings to the press; hardly the stuff of anti-lockdown incitement. BUT even if it could somehow be seen as true was there not perhaps good reason for anti-lockdown demonstrations in some of those states? Do you really think the Governor of Michigan had any right to keep people from gardening? Do you think they had the right to simply end the First Amendment? If you do you are not a person woth knowing.

"Insulted his own Cabinet members on Twitter"

Oh boo friggin hoo! Not like they don't work for the man and weren't sabotaging their employer's policies.

What follows are several complaints so ridiculous as to laughable.

But then you say:

"Believed he should be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize"

Now Mr. Trump was responsible for several peace agreements between Israel and other Middle Eastern countries. It was more than anything Barack Hussein Obama ever acomplished.

Jimmy Carter received the Nobel for something comparable.

"Berated and belittled his hand-picked Attorney General when he recused himself from the Russia probe"

And well he should have. This opened the door to years of endless investigation which largely paralyzed his Administration. Had Trump known Sessions was such a coward he would never have appointed him. What Sessions did was a betrayal of good faith.
He should have been fired by Trump for it.

"Repeatedly called the media "enemies of the people,”"

They are. I guess you don't like the truth.

"Insulted various members of Congress and the media with infantile nicknames"

O.K. You have no sense of humor. I get that. And perhaps you think it undignified and maybe it is. Trump is an average guy and we aren't used to average guys running the country. I guess we are better served with bluebloods who, in Ashley Wilkes fashion, project dignity and nobless oblige'. Trump is much more like Rhett Butler.

But is style more important than substance? Is it better to pay lip service to the American Spirit or actually follow it?

"Falsely claimed that he won the 2016 popular vote"

He did outside of California. You fail to add what Mr. Trump said "in the truest sense". He did. And we don't know how many illegal/fake votes were pumped into the system in California after the fact. We know there were a bunch of Republicans who had won re-election on election day only to have their seats taken as the count went on and on. The GOP lost no fewer than ten seats they held on election day nationwide as the vote counting countued. Trump was assuming this was bogus and I suspect to a large degree he was right.

"Called the Muslim mayor of London a "stone cold loser""

Oh, boo hoo!

"Mocked wearing face masks to guard against transmitting COVID"

There was no evidence facemasks accomplish anything of value. I know of at least 26 studies done over the years that show masking has no value against a disease like Covid 2.

Trump was following the science. Shoot, even Anthony Fauci called masking a Talisman.

"Forced his press secretary to claim without merit that his was the largest inauguration crowd in history"

What, did Trump stand there holding a gun to Sean Spicer's head? Did he threaten to beat up his wife? How exactly did he FORCE him to do this?

The fact is we don't really know how large the crowd was. The media was reporting 200,000 but other reports had it at over 300,000. Spicer cites 317,000.

But of course this is of Earth-shattering importance to you. America's very survival depends on which numbers of his inaugural are correct!

":Constantly interrupted Joe Biden in their first presidential debate"

Well, Joe Biden was constantly lying. Trump may have been rude, but Biden was more rude in that.

"Refused to attend his successors’ inauguration"

No, he refused to attend a sham ceremony by a usurper.

In case you missed it a huge number of Democrats refused to attend Trump's inauguration. https://www.rollcall.com/2017/01/17/here-are-the-democrats-skipping-trumps-inauguration/

And it was not unprecedented; John Adams skipped his successor's inaugural, as did John Quincy Adams, Martin Van Buren and Andrew Johnson and Richard Nixon all skipped.

I guess you hate John Adams then?

"
Seemed to demonstrate a belief that there were airports during the American Revolution"

Trump was reading a prepared speech from a teleprompter when he made that gaffe. It is the same kind of gaffe Obama made when he said there were 57 states, but I didn't see people like you get your panties in a bunch over that.

No doubt he meant to say SEAports.

You seem to dwell a lot on basic gaffes that you or any other person would make over a long period of time (such as misstating Namibia as Nambia.) You ignore the many gaffes of Joe Biden or Barack Obama. Biden has chronic foot-in-mouth disease and always has. https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Fun:List_of_Joe_Biden_gaffes

This shows your opinion is informed entirely by the media. Your view of politics is colored by what they choose to emphasize.

"Called his exceedingly faithful vice president a "pussy” for following the Constitution"

Not exactly. He said Pence could go down in history as a pussy if he didn't fight back over the theft of the election. Again, you allow the media to subtly change the language.

"Insulted war hero John McCain - even after his death"

Boo hoo again. McCain couldn't take some schoolyard banter? A guy who had been in the Hanoi Hilton? I would add Mr. McCain started it, dished it out plenty, but couldn't take it. https://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2018/08/who_really_started_the_trumpmccain_feud.html

McCain, by the way, was the guy who brought the Steele Dossier to the FBI. It had been circulating for a while and everyone knew it was b.s. but McCain hated Trump so he brought it to Comey's attention and thus started the lie of "Russian collusion". So Trump was supposed to just ignore all this?

"Spent an obscene amount of time playing golf after criticizing Barack Obama for playing (far less) golf while president"

How much time? Kindly provide the actual amount please.

Donald Trump spent more time at golf courses because he OWNS a lot of golf courses.

If this is your big complaint against Donald Trump...

"Ignored or didn’t even take part in daily intelligence briefings"

He was reading their reports. He thought it a waste of time taking the briefings, as they were designed to manipulate him and he knew it. It was just the way he operated, and not at all unlike the way Ronald Reagan did things.

You then go on with a series of ridiculous, petty complaints of dubious truthfullness that aren't really worth repeating or rebutting (like Trump calling himself a stable genius or his blasting Nordstroms for cancelling Ivankas line. Perhaps you missed it but Harry Truman once threatened to beat up a theatre critic who gave his daughter a bad review.)

I like the last one:

"
Struggled navigating a ramp after claiming his opponent was feeble"

Well, Biden was blown over by a big breeze.

Almost all of your complaints are about style and not substance. And so many of them are not true.

Basically your hatred of Mr. Trump stems from the fact that he doesn't do things the formal political way. Is that grounds for impeaching him? For the rage against him?

Your hatred of the man is astonishingly venial. But you got your marching orders from the mainstream media and are too lazy or biased to bother actually looking at what the man tried to do and what he did accomplish with the entirety of Washington against him.

Oh, I see you do not include "Russian collusion" in your list of why you hate Trump. Now why is that? Because you know it was a damnable lie. If they lied about that why wouldn't they lie to you about all the rest? I see you haven't mentioned the call to the President of the Ukraine. Why is that? Because you know that that too was a damnable lie. I see no mention of his call to the Secretary of State of Georgia. Why not? I repeat my refrain. All of this stuff was purposely taken out of context or just plain lied about. You know it too which is why you didn't include it in your list of grievances against Mr. Trump. Every major bombshell has proven a dud in the end, an untruthful exercise by the media. Yet you continue to believe them. Now you must resort to quibbling over things like the size of his inaugural crowd. It's really pathetic. You have no substance to your criticisms. You criticize Trump on style, a style that comports in many ways with the average American. Trump tells jokes like "maybe the Russians can find Hillary's e-mails" and people like you rise in fury at his "treason" for "asking the Russians to hack her e-mails". I suspect you know better but want to believe the worst about the man because, well, he BEAT your side Beat them fair and square. The media can't tolerate that and you, a dutiful foot soldier of the American propaganda machine, fall dutifully in line. .

1 Great job, Tim, though I suspect he stopped reading your reply after the first or second paragraph. People like him are very chary about encountering actual facts and evaluating them.

2 I'm sure he didn't bother to read it. Those kind never do.

I write things like that for the onlooker who may not have made up his mind yet about things. I try to show that these dark criticisms are in really nothing but smoke and mirrors.
