1 Daily Express keeps running articles with headlines reading, "Will Yellowstone Supervolcano Erupt?" about every ten days, and Google news includes them in "World News " category. Clickbait. The article says that Yellowstone is not going to erupt, but drones on in the "what if it does?" vein. Google demonstrates how useless it is as a news aggregator by including this bullshit.

2 Yeah; such speculation is pointless Bill. What if an asteroid hits the Earth? What if there is another Carrington Event and a massive solar flare ends our civilization? What if a black hole drifts into our solar system? Disaster stories are a dime a dozen. What actual value to they have? And this when there are real stories the media refuses to cover (like the theft of the election.)

4 Yes they are Dana. It's what Michael Crichton spoke about in "State of Fear". There is a cottage industry (well, not really cottage at all but a major industry) whose sole purpose is to generate fear in order to keep the populace in line. They use fear as the tool to keep themselves in power, too. He explains in the book, the Universities start it with some crazy terror study, then it is amplified by the media, which then reaches the political class who then write laws. The laws are the goal, not actually doing anything about the scare itself (which is a ruse). And the public dutifully goes along because they like being scared and want to do something to "save the planet" so their lives seem to have some meaning.

It's a machine.

I know Crichton is right; I took an anthropology class in college and one of the lectures was on how to control the populace. The professor (a huge flaming leftie) argued that in agrarian societies honor was the mechanism employed. People feared tarnishing their honor so obeyed laws and customs. In the industrial era the tool was guilt; making people feel guilty about everything was the way society kept everyone in line. Notice how guilt is eating up the younger generation these days and it's always guilt that promotes the Progressive agenda.

She never mentioned fear, but it is clear the Intelligentsia has been thinking about this for a long time. I took this class in '85 or '86.

So I suspect Crichton was correct in his assessment. Guilt and fear are kissing cousins and the tools the Left uses to advance their agenda and rule over the population.
