â€˜Google Doodleâ€™ Honors Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis, â€˜Father of Handwashingâ€™

This is one that has a timely feel. We're being urged to keep our hands clean, and most of us -- today's Democrat Party excepted, obviously -- are paying attention.

But it was not always thus.

In 1847, Dr. Semmelweis, a Jewish Hungarian doctor, began to sound the alarm in Vienna that women were needlessly dying in hospitals after childbirth due to the negligence of doctors, who routinely performed autopsies and other medical procedures without "botheringâ€ to wash their hands between procedures. Unfortunately, Semmelweisâ€™s calls for handwashing were rejected and mocked by his colleagues. He became severely depressed, and he was involuntarily committed to an insane asylum, where he died at the age of 47.

Quite amazing how something that today seems practically instinctive was fluffed off by medical "professionals."
