The Plagues of Egypt Visited on Tim

Timothy Birdnow

Boy, when it rains it pours!

First, my eye surgery is still in limbo, having been postponed several times and now, with the upswing in Wuhan Virus, it may be postponed into the indefinite. I want to just get this thing over; my wife Cathy had several eye surgeries this year and I just want these endless eye goughings over. I feel like I'm living in a Three Stooges movie.

Our house has been invaded by mice. All kinds of mice. Big ones, small ones, brown ones, gray ones. I've seen several different "races" of the filthy little boogers. I'm starting to feel like the guy in Willard. They bolt across the room, they scratch under the furniture, they get into papers. They only thing they DON'T seem to do is eat the poison I kindly provide for these little love children. And I haven't found their point of access, so they can just keep coming. I may have to hire a professional exterminator.

I had to get Cathy's car fixed last week, and inspected this. I had to replace my truck windshield, and IT needs to be inspected but I can't find the paperwork.

The heat just went out; had to use an oil space heater last night. It was pretty chilly. That doesn't bother me; the mice probably found it that way too!  It's good enough for them!

I just had to get the sewer open a week or two back and THAT is still a mess in the basement.

And I still have to get the IRS straightened out; I just received the form I needed from the Healthcare Marketplace.

This is going to  be one glum Holiday season. But then 2020 has been a year that has just stunk like an overfull outhouse on a hot summer's day. We can't get past this year fast enough!

2 Tim, I have time and energy tonight to address only one aspect here: the mice. FORGET about poisoning them. Buy traps. Termanix tm traps. They're very easy to use. Put a dab of peanut butter (the natural kind is probably best because it has no additives) on 'em, and Smuckers is cheaper (tastes great too), cock 'em, put 'em where the little buggers are coming in, and when you catch 'em, dump and seal 'em into pint-size Ziploc bags and toss 'em into the garbage. Freshen up the peanut butter; "lather, rinse, repeat." Those are the best traps because you won't catch your fingers in them. I've used 'em here to great effect. If Cathy's squeamish about mice, can't stand to hear the traps snap, give her a big shot of something to calm her down and send her to bed. This is big boy stuff here. I've been there and done that -- trust me, Tim, it's easy!

Remember: You're trying to kill the mice, not relocate them.

3 Dana, I deployed two standard mouse traps yesterday. My friend Dave said he used them with great success. Problem is, I don't know where they are getting in. So I put them out of the way but where the mice could find them (so they'd feel comfortable in taking the bait). This morning I found one trap flipped over and one untouched. I know a mouse went up to it last night (I was sitting in the room) but never took the bait. Just used so Jiff peanut butter on it. I do hope these things eventually work; I found it quite difficult to set the traps and deploy without nearly losing a finger! These types were all they had at the local hardware store. I guess I'll have to go to Home Depot to find some better ones.

I think maybe the poison I put down did some good; it looks like one of the love-children was at it last night. It works at the cabin. But I sure want to eliminate this whole problem.

Now if they start paying rent maybe I'd be less dilligent...

I have to figure out how they are getting in. I have plaster walls so they aren't in the walls. They may be coming up from the basement (there are still openings where the old radiators came up.) If I can contain them down there and work on killing them there it will be fine. That's their only water supply, too; when it rains the basement leaks. But I don't think they need much water.

A good drought would sure come in handy!

I pulled one of the window ac units out, thus securing that avenue. I don't know where else they can be coming from.
