McConnell threatens confirmation during election years

Timothy Birdnow

Well, well, well. Mitch "the prison bitch" McConnell, old jowelington himself, has found something in his back other than Stretch Armstrong material.

From Legal Insurrection:

"Mitch McConnell dropped a political nuclear bomb on Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace.

In discussing Senate confirmation of Supreme Court nominees, McConnell discussed how he did not allow Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garland to go forward. He contrasted the Republican position with Democrats’ attacks on Brett Kavanaugh by pointing out that Republicans didn’t try to destroy Garland, they simply followed Senate tradition of not voting on a nominee in a presidential election year.

But in describing that history, McConnell said that the history of the Senate going back to the 1800s was to not vote on a nominee in a presidential elections year where the president is of a different party than the party controlling the Senate."

End excerpt.

Soooooo

McConnell is threatening to confirm a SCOTUS pick by The Orange Menace even in an election year - something that has been done, just not by Republicans, not in a while.

He should; after what they did to Kavanaugh there must be consequences.

As McConnell says, the only thing "done" to Merrick Garland was that he did not receive a vote. There was no effort to shame or destroy the man. The gOP had the right to not vote on him; they controlled the Senate, after all, and what is the point of an election if not to give the people what they votede for? But the Democrats tried to conflate the non-vote on Garland with the blood libel of Kavanaugh. They are very, very different things.

While I often differ from McConnell on key matters of approach and, indeed, issues, I have to say this is a logical way to troll the Donkeys at this point. See, the temper tantrum they threw over Kavanaugh is not sitting well with the voting public, and Mitchie the Squid is trying to keep froth coming out of their mouths and their eyes rolled back in their heads. No reasonable person will vote for a rapid screwball having a kiniption.

The Bible tells us "as ye sow so shall ye reap". The Democrats sowed this, with changing the rules to stop the minority when they were in power, with previous attacks on Republican nominees, etc. Now they are reaping what they have sown.

1 Love Mitch McConnell, hate him or merely tolerate him, the man can count votes -- it's one of his jobs as Majority Leader, after all. And if the votes aren't there, as they most certainly were not for Merrick Garland, why waste the Senate's time bringing him up for confirmation? If the Democrats were not such a bunch of rabid dogs these days, they'd see the logic.

The Senate was solidly Republican. It's not a for-sure that the GOP Senators would have pulled their usual roll-over-and-play-dead act once again. But Mitch decided to make sure they did not have the chance. Let's give him some appreciation. He's becoming a really solid "Trumper" these days -- look at the job he did on the Kavanaugh confirmation. The man has developed a spine. Oh, there was that little matter of the turncoat from Alaska, but remember, she isn't a real Republican.
