Today marks Earth's perihelion, the planets closest approach to the Sun.
It usually happens just after the New Year.
People are often surprised to learn the Earth is closer to the Sun in the dead of winter. But it's summer in the Southern Hemisphere when perihelion and aphelion coincide with the seasons, suggesting we have the planet flipped upside down in our thinking.
In point of fact, summers and winters are more severe in the southern hemisphere than in the northern, since we have our closest approach to the Sun in winter and are farthest away in summer.
And the exact day is never quite the same, as the Earth has certain vagueries in motion that changes the day from year to year.
So it really is a day to celebrate! I decided to party hearty by having an extra cup of coffee and wishing it were springtime!

Naturally, someone will come along and point out some anomaly such as Machu Picchu, to which I would say "Really? What lasting influence did its people leave? Nobody's even sure just what people lived there."
I will grant you that Brazil is responsible for the bossa nova. But you seldom even hear that played anymore, except maybe by bands staffed by old farts like me.

And, as you say, what great cultural things have come out of the Southern Hemisphere? The Basa Nova, surely. Argentina is known for the Tamgo. But what else?
Granted, there is less land in the south. But you had the entire continent of Australia and they were essentially old stone age people. And southern Africa didn't produce much except Shaka, the vicious Zulu king.
