Many of the dragon legends in Europe, China, and other parts of Asia, and much of the world were likely based on reality after all. The "legends" are too common and held by so many disparate cultures to ignore as just coincidences.
"Australia’s largest flying reptile has been uncovered, a pterosaur with an estimated seven-metre wingspan that soared like a dragon above the ancient, vast inland sea once covering much of outback Queensland. University of Queensland PhD candidate Tim Richards, from the Dinosaur Lab in UQ’s School of Biological Sciences, led a research team that analysed a fossil of the creature’s jaw, discovered on Wanamara Country, near Richmond in North West Queensland. "It’s the closest thing we have to a real life dragon,” Mr Richards said."

Tim adds:
I've often thought the same. Dragons are a ubiquitous legend and there has to be some common root for that. I can't think of any living animal capable of producing such a legend, so it seems to me that there was such a creature at one time. And no, I'm not talking about Hillary Clinton.
On the other hand we never found fossils of dragons, which suggests they were mythical.. It's one of those mysteries I think we'll never fully solve.
One thing is certain; a dragon would be a great pet, especially if you have a weenie roast or want to toast mashmallows.
