The Color of (Hydrogen) Money

Diane Kimura

If you thought the green energy push was expensive, "green hydrogen" will become the next agenda to justify taxpayer funded subsidies.

Facts matter and the old invented marketing term of "fossil fuels" is totally incorrect.

Oil, natural gas and coal are *natural hydrocarbons* and are not made from fossils, and are not in short supply.

About a century ago, Rockefeller coined the marketing buzzword "fossil fuel" to imply there was a scarcity of oil, and to try to increase the price of his oil based on the implied scarcity of oil.

Hydrocarbons are *not* made from decayed dinosaurs.

From the article:

"Exxon CEO Darren Woods went so far as to suggest that the US would not meet its net-zero emissions target for 2050, partly due to the high cost of renewable H2, he said during an appearance at energy conference CERAWeek, according to energy website E&E News.

"One of the challenges here is while society wants to see emissions reduced, nobody wants to pay for it,” Woods said.

"There’s a hesitancy for people to sign up for low-carbon hydrogen.”

Aramco CEO Amin Nasser told delegates that, in energy terms, the cost of green H2 amounted to the equivalent of $400 per barrel of oil — roughly five times the current price.

He added that renewable hydrogen would only be affordable with a "significant amount of [government] incentives and offtake agreements of at least 15 years” — but that companies are wary of starting businesses that are only profitable with subsidies and would then be unable to make money if those were taken away.

Nasser also said during a panel interview that the energy transition is "visibly failing”.

"A transition strategy reset is urgently needed and my proposal is this:

We should abandon the fantasy of phasing out oil and gas and instead invest in them adequately reflecting realistic demand assumptions,” he said, to applause from the audience.

Woods also told the conference that Exxon would not produce any blue hydrogen — made from fossil gas with carbon capture and storage — unless the proposed renewables-focused guidelines to access the hydrogen production tax credit (PTC) were amended to allow methane-derived H2. ..."

Tim adds:

Hydrogen must be made and it takes more energy to create it than it gives back. It's a loser. I would add it emits water vapor - which is itself a greenhouse gas, the primary greenhouse gas. Of course, if made from water it simply returns to it's natural state, but so? Natural gas simply returns to it's natural state -carbon dioxide and water.

The fact is carbon dioxide is not a problem and has only been made to be such by a power-hungry international order and alarmist media. At 0.04% of the atmosphere we are talking about 4 molecules in every TEN THOUSAND molecules of air. And of those less than one of them are anthropogenic.

BTW,we don't know how much is anthropogenic. The Pandemic saw a 25% reduction in industrial carbon dioxide emissions and yet atmospheric CO2 continued to rise at the same rate, suggesting it is in fact a natural phenomenon. Oh, and of course the world's main atmospheric test sight is on the lip of an active volcano. Go figure.

This is a profoundly stupid argument we're having as a civilization. It's a generation-long War of the Worlds scare, nothing more.

As for the colored hydrogen, must EVERYTHING be rainbow transgendered these days?

1 The reality is that carbon dioxide isn't an issue; the media and a power-hungry world order have made it seem that way. io games
