Simple Steps; Powerful Results - Hall shares simple and inspiring success stories and practical steps you can take for winning in your local community. Sometimes small acts can yield powerful results.

Confucious allegedly said (Confucious was a wordy one, wasn't he!) "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step" and that is right. A movement isn't born at the top. That is like starting your business career as CEO of a Fortune 500 company. No, it starts in the mail room.. If we are to restore the nation it must start at the grass roots. School boards. Precinct captains. All of the drudge work of politics is where we must shine. We have the numbers after all; they don't. It must be like the tide coming in; they see it but can't stop it. Sadly, too often in this day and age our side is too busy with the labors of life that we fail to participate and the enemy ignores those labors in favor of political activism. We need more balance.

1 This is the problem with grass roots today. Workers make symbolic gestures, like one-day walkouts, and demand that Congress pass laws requiring higher wages.

In the 1960s we stood on a picket line with axe handles in hand and demanded that our employer raise wages to a specific amount. Until that happened, the employer was shut down, because workers had the power to do that, and we used that power.

We faced armed police who said we were breaking the law and threatened to fire on us. We said go ahead. They would kill some of us, we told them, but we outnumbered them sufficiently that we would, in the end, kill all of them. They did not fire.

Workers, citizens, have power. We used that power back then in strikes and in the voting booth. We still have that power, but lack the courage to use it.

2 Now the Unions are a part of the Establishment and work for their own benefit, not the benefit of the people they represent. I know; I got screwed by the Union I was a member of for years.

Now the way it works is the Union bosses negotiate something that is pleasing to them and then try to trick or cajole the members into supporting it.

Bill, the time when Unions were a positive force is long over, I fear.
