The Purpose of the Facemask

Wearing these masks is the way the Progressives are getting people invested in "the cause". It's an old tactic; get people doing something that they wouldn't normally do then they are loathe to desbelieve it. They want this pandemic, and want it to continue for some time. A lot of people would turn against the power grab going on if they started actually examining the real world situation, so there has to be a sacrament to keep them on the bandwagon. I think these masks are largely useless but they push them because getting people to wear them is half of the battle - not to protect people from the disease but to get the public to accept the bit in the mouth.

It's like the Islamic Turbin or the full beard, or like the Army buzz haircut. I remember the Clint Eastwood movie "Heartbreak Ridge" where he makes his outfit get standard Marine haircuts "when you start looking like Marines you'll start acting like them."

Put a facemask on someone and he feels like an obedient person. You've gotten him to accept the saddle on the back.

1 Considering the virus is spread by contact, rather than by air, you're pretty much right. I wore my mask to the supermarket -- once. Problem is, this is allergy season so my nose is running worse than it normally does. And for some unknown reason, it tends to get irritated in the produce section of any supermarket. Put a mask over it and, well, I don't need to spell it out for you; suffice to say that an old man sneezing up a storm in a supermarket gets his share of dirty looks these days. And the mask needed washing afterward.

3 Yeah Dana; the facemask is rather pointless. And on a meta note, the idea of stopping the spread of this is wrong; we need to get young, healthy people infected so as to develop herd immunity. The longer we drag this out the worse it will be, both in terms of infections and in terms of the damage to the economy.

Another point; if you ever read "One Second After" by William Fosschen (about an EMP attack on America) one of the things his community does is keep the highway open for travellers so they stop camping on the town's border. To do that they put armed guards along the highway and have anyone who interacts with a refugee wear hazmat suits, or at least surgical masks and gloves. They were worried about infection (everyone was sick from bad water and exposure and whatnot with no antibiotics) but this also served a psychological purpose, frightening the refugees (what do the people behind the masks have?) and shaming then as "unclean". It kept them moving along.

Americans are all "unclean" now and feel worried when someone doesn't wear a mask. We've been successfully browbeaten and atomized.

4 I tried wearing my mask to the supermarket once. Bad experience. This is allergy season, and my nose is running and I'm sneezing. A mask just complicates matters, and sneezing into the mask gets it all... well, never mind, you get the picture. For some reason I tend to get sneezy in the produce section year-round, and it's worse now. And when you sneeze while wearing a mask people get suspicious of you.

6 Yeah; you will befoul your mask pretty quickly. As you say, though, people won't be happy with you sneezing up a storm in public these days.

Dana I hope CV 19 doesn't cause memory loss; I'm bad enough these days myself.
