Mask Wearing Not Sound Science

This from Willis Eschenbach:

In case you thought you were following the science by wearing a mask ... you weren't. From the Center For Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP)

https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2020/04/commentary-masks-all-covid-19-not-based-sound-data

And for everyone ragging on me and telling me that by my not wearing a mask I'm killing grandpa, you can osculate my fundament.

I am grandpa.

1 My pastor and her husband would probably disbelieve every word of this; and Pastor used to work in a hospital.

Well, I guess what you believe is more important than the ultimate truth these days, as we know only too well. If that weren't the case, the Democrat Party would have gone out of business a long time ago.

Yeah, I'm grandpa too. I'll keep wearing mine in (some) stores just because it's expected, and mandatory in others, and I dislike picking fights.

2 Well, the main reason for not wearing a mask is that the virus is just not all that contagious. If it were we would get data like, "we tested 1000 people at random and 80% tested positive." But we do not have even one piece of data that comes within hand grenade distance of that.

Diamond Princess: 3700 people living in very close quarters. 100% tested, 20% tested positive. Additionally, a high number of those testing positive shared a cabin with a person testing negative.

USS Theodore Rooseveldt: 5000 sailors, living in very close quarters. 20% tested positive.

Every civic location (including Italy which was reported as a horror story) which has reported the results of general testing has reported 5% infection rate, with the exception of NYC which reports a bit above 10% rate. Compare that to the normal seasonal flu which always infects 10% or more.

They cannot claim that the low infection rate is due to measures of mask wearing and "social distancing." The first death from this virus in California was in Dec 2019. The number in the name of the disease is for the year it appearred, 2019. I caught the disease in January. The lockdown started in California on March 19, 2020, so the diease was spreading for 3.5 months or more and infected less than 5% of the population.

The statements of "health officials" and politicians that "this is a highly contagious virus" are simply not true.

3 Dana, I've observed that many of the  people who work in the medical profession are essentially gullible, largely because that is how medicine works - top down. Doctors follow guidelines set down by agencies like the CDC, and everyone else obeys doctors unquestioningly. It's a very autocratic system. If you can get control of the top of the chain you control how everyone in medicine thinks.

It's why it was a maxim that stomach ulcers were caused by stress. They aren't, and eventually one doctor refused to accept the conventional wisdom. They are now fairly easily treated with antibiotics. Think of all the suffering that so many endured with ulcers unnecessarily. It was because the group so deemed it.

Now, with science firmly in the hands of the political leadership via funding, it's relatively easy for a few elites to impose their will on the whole profession. It's true in other sciences too - like Climatology.

4 Hmmm... Bill -- and Tim -- I think what you're both saying is that the Left had to make a crisis of this by scaring hell out of everybody, otherwise they couldn't use it as a club to beat on Trump -- right? I'll buy that.

And Andy Cuomo's a hero because he managed to kill more people with it than other Leftist governors, thereby proving just how dangerous a disease it is. In a sensible world he'd have been arrested for Dereliction of Duty. In this crazy world he's yelling that the Feds need to bail New York out, it's a matter of morality. Or is that Newsom, of the Peoples' Republic of Californica? Or both of them? It's getting hard to keep the Communists straight these days. But they both let their states go pretty much broke (Newsom worse than Cuomo) and they both expect Trump to bail them out, thinking they're too big to fail. I sure as heck hope he doesn't!

5 The use of fear, Dana, is not just to beat Trump. It is also (and mainly, actually) a distraction from what Democrats are doing toward the destruction of democracy.
