Farmers to feed cows seaweed to cut down on gas emissions

Dana Mathewson

It's not a joke, though I suppose it looks like one. And the article doesn't say whether they're talking about beef cows or dairy cows, though I'm assuming it's the latter. So what will the milk taste like?
Coastal Maine has a lot of seaweed, and a fair number of cows. A group of scientists and farmers think that pairing the two could help unlock a way to cope with a warming world.

The researchers -- from a marine science lab, an agriculture center and universities in northern New England -- are working on a plan to feed seaweed to cows to gauge whether that can help reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.

About a quarter of the methane in the country comes from cattle, which produce the gas when they belch or flatulate.

The concept of feeding seaweed to cows has gained traction in recent years because of some studies that have shown its potential to cut back on methane. The reduction might be because the seaweed interrupts the process of production of the gas in the animals' guts.

There you have it in a nutshell. Most of the article deals with the scientists' search for the particular seaweed that will produce the best reduction in methane and still be acceptable to the cows. Not a single word about the effect on the taste of the milk or the meat. And will the cows agree to eat the stuff? https://www.foxbusiness.com/technology/farmers-to-feed-cows-seaweed-to-cut-down-on-gas-emissions

It was always fun to tell kids that chocolate milk came from brown cows. Will feeding seaweed to cows turn them green?

1 Getting rid of cows and beef has been oeyne of the primary goals of the Gang Green for decades - longer than the Global Warming scheme has been their main focus.  They hate it because they want an international cuisine that is largely vegetarian. You can find them arguing for this well back into the '60's, long before anyone had heard of global warming.  I wrote about it at American Thinker way back when.

Beef in particular is hated by the Left, who see it as a symbol of American capitalism; we are the only country that can eat large amounts of beef on a regular basis. They want us eating fish and chicken and rice, like the Chinese or other poor people.

So this "cow methane" business was made to ordered.

If you remember the movie "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" the character played by Milton Berle lost all his money in a seaweed farm; he was a sucker who bought this kind of stupidity. We were all laughing - then.  But now they've actually made him into a visionary.  But in the end it's still comedic, whether some people make money on it or not. Seaweed is nothing but underwater grass, after all.

2 Underwater grass it may be, but the salt content is bound to be higher than the stuff that grows in meadows. Like, for example, the grass the cows eat in the Cheshire district in England. It's salty, and gives a natural salty flavor to the cheese that's made from the milk of the native cows. Cheshire cheese -- real Cheshire cheese -- is wonderful stuff. But you'll taste the salt in the milk too.
