Did God Order Abortion?

Timothy Birdnow

A big brouhaha erupted on Facebook over the "fidelity test" in the Book of Numbers. The post's author gave us this:

The only mention of abortion in the Bible is a >right< that >husbands< can >compel< their wife to abort if they suspect she’s unfaithful — and a priest will help ‘em do it! Numbers 5:11-31‬

Countless posters tried to argue this justifies abortion.

Needless to say I disagree.
I replied:

Is this about an abortion? https:// www.gotquestions .org/ Numbers-abortion .htmlFrom the article: "Some propose that Numbers 5:11-31 refers to God causing an abortion. The 2011 edition of the NIV mistakenly states that the drink will cause miscarriage in Numbers 5:21-22, 27. However, this is not what the passage is talking about. Pregnancy is nowhere mentioned, or even hinted at, in the text. The only thing that even sounds like pregnancy is the guilty wife’s stomach becoming bloated, but even in that instance, it has nothing to do with pregnancy. Further, the passage does not say that drinking the concoction would cause an abortion/
miscarriage. While drinking a poisonous mixture of ingredients could very well cause a miscarriage, that is not what this text is speaking of. If a wife was found guilty, the punishment was death (Leviticus 20:10). If the wife was found innocent, she would be "cleared of guilt” and "able to have children” (Numbers 11:28). So, again, Numbers 5:11-31 does not refer to abortion in any sense. Rather, it is describing a method that God allowed to be used to determine if a wife had committed adultery against her husband."

Jeremiah 1:5 "I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart.

Murder is taking life for your own purposes. Abortion is clearly murder.

See also:

Isaiah 49:1,5 Listen to me, O coast lands, and give attention, you peoples from afar. The LORD called me from the womb, from the body of my mother he named my name…

Psalms 22:9-10 Yet you are he who took me from the womb

Genesis 25:22-26 The children struggled together within her, and she said, "If it is thus, why is this happening to me?” So she went to inquire of the LORD. And the LORD said to her, "Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you shall be divided; the one shall be stronger than the other, the older shall serve the younger.”

Galatians 1:15 But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and who called me by his grace.

BTW, this passage can actually be used to justify restrictions on abortion. It clearly shows having children is a blessing, and that it is a grievous punishment to be denied that opportunity. That is what is happening in this passage; the woman drinks "bitter water" which, the passage states, is water with a little bit of dust from the temple floor. Nowhere does it say she is already pregnant, but it says she won't be able to bear in the future. Miscarriages were always a punishment in the Old Testament; David was punished with Bathsheeba miscarrying, for instance. And God is the one who has the right to decide - not Man. This passage makes that quite plain.

Jeremiah 1:5 "I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart.

A final thought:

The Bible is the inspired Word of God. On the other hand, the Koran is considered by Muslims to be the exact word of Allah, dictated word for word to Muhammed. Anyone wonder why Islam never seems to leave the 7th century? Anyone?
