Recently we were lectured on global warming by a Harvard freshman dropout named Bill Gates. Last year we were lectured about how easy it is to grow crops without specialized knowledge by a high tech graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology named Michael Bloomberg.

You know who knows more about both agriculture and the effect of climate on the earth than the both of them? It is a native Iowan Harvard graduate with honors in literature who, after not formally using his education for a number of years, successfully became a four term Republican U.S. Congressman from that state who learned a great deal about agriculture and championed that issue in Washington, a skill that got him reelected three times before he retired.

When this native Iowan first graduated Harvard, he tried his hand at acting on television. Cong. Fred Grandy was Assistant Purser Burl "Gopher" Smith on the Love Boat tv series in the 1970s. So I dare say that Gopher knows more about climate and growing seasons, soil erosion, etc. than either Bill Gates or Michael Bloomberg. Grandy was also formerly President of Goodwill Industries and a Senior Fellow for National Security Affairs at the Washington-based Center for Security Policy, When Grandy held that last position, I interviewed him in New York and posted it on the Aviary years ago - without mentioning to him his famous tv role.
