"The disadvantage of men not knowing the past is that they do not
know the present. History is a hill or high point of vantage, from
which alone men see the town in which they live or the age in which
they are living. Without some such contrast or comparison, without some
such shifting of the point of view, we should see nothing whatever of
our own social surroundings. We should take them for granted, as the
only possible social surroundings."
G.K. Chesterton

Yes, it's called context. The present means nothing absent the context of history.

How can you study history when it is rewritten to meet the current truth daily?

Well, Mike, you just have to make sure you are going to reliable sources.

Exactly Bill. Sadly our whole civilization has stopped studying real history and so lacks all context.
The young have no idea of why things were the way they were and are now the way they are. They are taught to view history through the prism of modern values. That cannot work.

It makes things difficult for sure Mike. Sadly the young use only electronic medium and not old, original sources (like books). And the Progressives rewrite it all the time, erasing whatever doesn't fit their current narrative.
That's why it's important to preserve books. We need a survival library full of old history and literature so it will not be expunged from the world.

It's also important to preserve old sources called "wise people." I'll name just two here, though there are a number of them: Thomas Sowell and Victor Davis Hanson. Any time you see something written by either of them, drop whatever else you're doing and read it -- cover to cover if you have time.
