Target Corporation stock is at $71 this morning. For a full
year it was between $55 and $90. At the time of the "coed bathrooms" policy, it
was at $85 and it was pretty high a short time ago but after November 5th, it
has gone down from $85 to its present $71.
JC Penny, whose sophisticated "we know better than you
peasants" management hired Ellen Degeneres as their spokesperson a few years
ago, saw its stock drop from $40 to $10. NOW it is $1.19 a share.
One could make an argument that these losses iare retribution
from G-d. Progressives would scoff at it, saying the drops in share price has
been the result of bad management and the effects of Amazon.com. But other
department stores like Kohl's are doing much better and I would think that bad
management starts with scoffing one's "deplorable" customers'
values.
2c from Dana Mathewson:
Ya THINK? It would seem to me that Penney's choice of DeGeneres was
strange, to say the least. Now, Ellen is perhaps the least threatening of the
"alternate lifestyles" people out there; she's actually pretty sweet, at least
when I've seen her. She'd be welcome at any of our parties -- certainly as
opposed to Rosie O'Donnell!
But how many of Penney's regular customers would necessarily
know that, would have actually seen her on TV? I'll bet they only know OF her --
know of her as a lesbian and take a "dim view" of her because of that. Kind of
like people who refuse to eat venison because they saw "Bambi" as a
kid.
Penny's is becoming an "also ran" operation anyhow, because
of stores like (who else) Walmart. Back in the day Martha would have gone there
for bedding and such, but now she goes first to a discount place called Big
Lots, where the quality is as good and the prices are much
lower.
As far as Target, what can I say? They're never going to live
the bathroom decision down.
