Lester Dolt, er, Holt had this to say about the Turkey/Kurd situation:
On Facebook a bit of an argument erupted over Trump's pullout from Syria. A guy named Jeff observed:
There were only 50-100 troops they all would have been what... Slaughtered ? Sometimes allies need to be reconsidered...
A woman named Mandy snarkily replied:
A guy named Mike jumped in:
Our old buddy Wil Wirtanen replied:
I replied:
- Mandy your claim that we "aren't jack ship without our allies" is undefensible. In point of fact our allies aren't "jack ship" without US. WE are the ones who do all the heavy lifting in the world. We pay all the bills. Ask yourself; are the Chinese nothing because they don't involve themselves in everyone else's wars? You need to look a little closer at modern history.
- BTW, the Kurds are not a monolithic bunch. In fact, the PKK are MARXISTS and we are idiots if we help them. There are some who are Islamists too. It's like thinking all Native Americans were the same and then trying to eliminate them as we did in the Nineteenth century. There was no "indian" but a whole lot of different nations. You want to lump the Kurds together in the same fashion then say we "abandoned" them. It is not so
and another:
- Alliences are not marriages. Oh, and who cares what the architects of bad policy think, Michael Austin? And by "everyone in Washington" you mean all the journalists and Democrats, don't you! Look around; people like Rand Paul are on board with Trump's actions. You haven't heard of any of them because the media dutifully doesn't report them.
- It is fair to disagree with this policy, but it should be done because being IN Syria is good policy, not because you simply hate Trump and oppose him to oppose him. Our Syria policy has been rudderless since Obama/Clinton started pushing for regime change there. We have no long term plan - just endless warfare in a civil war that is not our own. Had we not gotten involved in the first place and created a power vacuum we would not have seen the rise of ISIS, the invasion of Europe by "refugees", or the troubles the Kurds are facing. As it is, we have to have an exit strategy, and people who opposed Bush in Iraq now demand Trump continue endless war. If you really believe that, that is fine, but you have to explain what we are trying to accomplish, how we will do so, and how we will get out.
- You demanded it of Bush when he intervened; why not ask that of the Democrats now?
