Slavery Not Just American

Timothy Birdnow

On Facebook Willis Eschenbach observed:

A good overview of the history of slavery. Well worth reading.

The Truth About Slavery

A man named Andy replied:

Good article. Slavery was legal and common for 10,000 years, until 1981 when it was finally outlawed in Mauritania, the last country where slavery was legal. We are all descended from slaves. The majority of the people in Viking cities and villages were slaves, same in the UK, Russia, Italy, and nearly every country prior to 1700. The U.S. was one of the first ten countries to make slavery illegal. Slavery was legal in China until 1910 and Russia until 1906.

I added:

And don't forget there are many places where it is NOT legal but is ignored. Nigeria, for example. And we have sexual slavery everywhere, as human trafficking is quite common. It is one of the things that infuriates me at the BLM types; they don't care about modern day slavery, in Africa, in Asia, etc. They want to keep beating on America for something we eliminated with the blood of tens of thousands of our citizens and vast sums of treasure.

Slavery was not eliminated in the European colonies of most nations until well after the U.S. Spain abolished slavery in Puerto Rico in 1873, for example, and in Cuba in 1886. The Dutch abolished it about the same time as the U.S. (in 1863.) Brazil abolished slavery in 1888. And, what is often ignored, is that the U.S. banned the slave TRADE in 1808. We certainly weren't the first to abolish slavery but we were hardly the last. And we did it at great cost, almost tearing out country apart. Nobody else did that (we had more reason than most to be attached to the institution because of cotton). Liberia - founded by freed American slaves - reinstituted slavery and kept it until the 1930's! But we are singled out. .

2 What a shame kids aren't taught this in school these days. All kids need to hear this. And learn it.

3 It's really pathetic they aren't. Now they are taught that basically America was alone in slavery. Or if they are taught about slavery in other countries at all it is said they always had it while America "invented" it here. Ridiculous!  It's no wonder Antifa and Black Lives Matter are full of young people; they don't know the difference between their anal orifice and a coal mine entryway.
