The usual route to an officer’s commission includes four years at Annapolis or another military academy or months of intense training at Officer Candidate School. ROTC programs send prospective officers to far-flung summer training programs and require military drills during the academic year.
Mr. Buttigieg skipped all that—no obstacle courses, no weapons training, no evaluation of his ability or willingness to lead. Paperwork, a health exam and a background check were all it took to make him a naval officer. . . .â€

I've got an unopened bottle of Knob Creek here, and a little Makers Mark left from New Years. Oh, and a bottle of Birddogs Blackberry Whiskey waiting to be consumed. That last is "sipping whiskey" meaning it's sweetened and flavored. I like it for a nightcap; pour a little brandy snifter full at the end of the night. I had tried it here in St. Louis but never could find it. I found it in a GAS STATION in a town called Cherokee Pass on my route to the Ozark Hilton! They always have a lot of it in stock, too; one full shelf. I think deer and duck hunters probably buy it to keep warm. Not what you'd call great whiskey, but I like it. More like brandy, really.
At any rate, I'd say our bars are fairly evenly stocked.

My day-to-day poison is Evan Williams, partly due to the price. The Beam was a birthday present from a musician colleague, and I'm going slow on that. The Redemption was a Christmas present from Martha. And we always have E&J VS brandy, which is Martha's favorite pour these days, and I'll help myself to that once in awhile as an alternative.
In the freezer is a cheap gin and a cheap vodka, both of which punch above their weight on taste. A shot of either makes Happy Hour when Martha has to be at the school for rehearsal.
I have to get more wine today, and we're having a cold snap -- it's -7 at the moment. Not looking forward to going out. Bijou said NO when I took him out this morning, even with boots on, so I'll have to see what happens after lunch.
And to top it off, my landlady is supposed to return from two days and nights in the hospital after knee-replacement surgery. At least her house will be warm -- she had to have a new furnace installed a month ago.

It's been cold here too. Four degrees this morning! And by Saturday they are predicting 50! We have some really crazy weather here in Missouri.
Too bad about your landlady. Hope her knees are doing well.
I've been really busy; my father has had a hip/back problem and has been in terrible pain. It's worrisome since he still lives alone. I've had to go up there every day and take care of him. Add to that Cathy had to have a major eye surgery on tuesday. It's been one heckuva hectic week! On top of that I had a pneumonia shot and have felt rather sickly ever since. When it rains it pours...
