Painting of Jesus's face found in ancient Israeli church
Jack Kemp
You can see a photo of the Sixth Century painting (more like a
sketch of facial features) found in Israel at the short article's website at

Color me skeptical, but how do they, or anyone else, know what Jesus
looked like? And the "short-haired" idea makes me more skeptical. Jesus
certainly was what we now call an Orthodox Jew, and they have strict rules about
trimming their hair -- or not. (Right, Jack?)
I think this is no more or less accurate than today's popular
renderings by artists Hoffman and Jambor.
Jack replies:
I know some generalizations here. You can trim your beard and
hair if you are a religious Jew, just not cut it off. Being that Jesus did not
hold a high religious establishment position in the Jerusalem Temple that
required a more formal appearance - and he lived in a much warmer climate than
is depicted in the movie "Fiddler on the Roof," he may have cut his hair back
somewhat.
