Donald Trump has ordered the creation of a Space Force, a fifth branch of the U.S. military.

According to Reuters:

"It is not enough to merely have an American presence in space. We must have American dominance in space,” Trump said before a meeting of his National Space Council.

"We are going to have the Air Force and we’re going to have the ‘Space Force.’ Separate but equal. It is going to be something,” he said later.: End excerpt.

And so Trump has ordered the creation of a new branch of the U.S. military.

"Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White said the department’s policy board would prepare to implement Trump’s order.

"Working with Congress, this will be a deliberate process with a great deal of input from multiple stakeholders,” White said in a statement.

In December, the president signed a directive that he said would enable astronauts to return to the moon and eventually lead a mission to Mars. He has ordered the government to review regulations on commercial space flights. "

The Russians, with whom Donald Trump is supposedly colluding, are not happy. According to RT:

" Washington’s plan to create a Space Force could lead to catastrophe, a Russian Senator has warned. Moscow’s ready to "strongly retaliate” if the US violates the outer space treaty by putting weapons of mass destruction into orbit.

"Militarization of space is a way to disaster,” Viktor Bondarev, the head of the Russian Federation Council’s Defense and Security Committee told RIA news agency just day after the US President Donald Trump ordered the creation of a new branch of the US military that would be tasked with operating in what he called "forbidden skies.”

The senator warned that Washington could potentially violate international agreements regulating the demilitarization of space and thus put the international security in a grave danger. "There is a major risk that the Americans would commit grave violations in this field … if one takes into account what they do in other spheres,” Bondarev said."

Gee - I thought the Russians WANTED Donald Trump to beat Hillary because they could manipulate him.

The reality is space is being militarized by others, notably the Russians and Chinese, and Trump realizes we must take the high ground. It is military 101; the army holding the high ground will be the victor. We've ignored this, and have stuck to the Outer Space Treaty, a treaty from over fifty years ago. At the time the treaty made perfect sense, but it is now fairly out of date and our good friends the Russians and Chinese have been opening space to weaponry.

And bear in mind the North Koreans have to know that we have space weapon capability. Look, they are reaching the point where they could put space weapons up to threaten us. As Trump said "I've got a bigger button and mine works" and this is part of the counter-threat. "Rocket man" needs to understand we have bigger rockets, too.

America is absolutely dependent on satellites and space technology both for military and civilian defense. If we allow others to be in a position to destroy or seriously cripple those capabilities, America can be defeated in war. In fact, America could be completely destroyed by the destruction of our space capabilities.

If we don't start working toward a space force now we will find ourselves staring down the barrel of a nuclear space gun later. It would be like not building air planes until after WWII or trying to maintain a navy of windjammers in 1905. Times change and those who fail to change with them perish.
