Happy Aphelion Day!

Timothy Birdnow

Happy Aphelion Day!  Today marks the day the Earth is farthest from the Sun. As it is falling on July 4 this year, and given the kind of year America is having, I think it fitting; we are clearly reaching a nadir of sorts and even the Sun is getting as far away from us as possible.

1 Meanwhile, temperatures are in the nineties here in the Twin Cities (a.k.a. Sodom and Gomorrah) of Minnesota, and my nice suburb too. Sun is down here and I'm hearing relentless fireworks.

2 Normally by this time of year we have fireworks going off everywhere. But this year, in an attempt to add to the general misery, the City of St. Louis said they weren't going to tolerate fireworks and they have been seizing them on a titanic scale from anyone who dares to enjoy the Fourth. Effing Democrats!

3 They are happy to allow rioting and looting but draw the line with bottle rockets...

4 Heh! It was so noisy that I went out on the front lawn before going to bed, to see if I could see anything. I also wanted to see if I could see the July full moon -- the Buck Moon -- which I should have been able to spot, but although my weather app said it was clear, obviously it wasn't -- or maybe the moon hadn't risen yet. Couldn't see a single firework, but doggone, it sounded like Fallujah! This morning on my walk with Bijou we walked over a bunch of spent fireworks on the sidewalk a ways up from our home.

5 I hope Bijou wasn't too scared; that's pretty frightening for dogs, who hear so much better than we and don't understand what is happening.

With all the Somalis I'm surprised they don't just shoot guns in the air like they do in St. Louis' poorer neighborhoods.
