Main point: Obama should have talked Ginsburg into retiring from the court, then he'd have been able to pick her replacement.

Yeah, talking an egomaniac like Ginsburg into retireing early would have been about as easy as selling roller coaster ride tickets to 8 month pregnant women. It wasn't going to happen. Ginsburg would, among other things, considered it the Patriarcy trying to impose its will on a senior woman.
A cabinet meeting to discuss this would have gone something like this two minute Youtube clip. Substitute the words "Democratic Party" for the word "Pepsi" and you have the speech that would have occured if Obama asked Ginsburg to resign.
