The Philippines have not been "under our protection" since they threw us out of our bases in 1992.

Just because we don't have bases there Bill doesn't mean we don't patrol their waters or that we won't come to their aid. And it's definitely not how the Chinese see it; they take a long view of things.

Being "under our protection" requires treaties, which we no longer have. The end of the treaties resulted in us being thrown out of our bases, and also ended the agreements for mutual defense. We do patrol their waters, but for our security, not theirs, and we have no agreements to come to their defense.

Again Bill you aren't looking at this from the Chinese perspective. They are tweaking us by going after our former colony. That's how THEY see it. You can talk about treaties and legalities all day, but in the end we are there and they want to do that just to thumb us in the eye.
