Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez suggests the IRS should do your taxes for you

Dana Mathewson

Sure. What could possibly go wrong? My question to her is "Would you have them do YOURS?"

Disclosure: My wife is our family's CFO. We spend a few bucks every year to buy what she deems is the appropriate version of Turbo-Tax (generally in February) from Sam's Club, and she goes to work. Yes, it takes her hours. And finally she files, electronically, from her computer in our office. Does she get the best "deal?" Probably not; if we hired a high-priced accountant we might be able to save a few more bucks, but the cost of the accountant would wipe that out many times over.

But if we put everything into the benevolent claws of the IRS? Don't even ask.

But here's AOC:

As reform legislation Opens a New Window. advances through Congress Opens a New Window. that may eliminate a future IRS-created free filing software for taxpayers, New York Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez suggested most Americans shouldn’t be preparing their own taxes.

In a speech on the House floor, the freshman lawmaker refereced (SIC) a Vox article which deemed it a "huge scandal” that lawmakers have not yet required the IRS to automatically prepare taxes for most Americans.

"Long-term, we should be looking at a solution where everyday people do not necessarily have to spend hours every year preparing tax returns, when the majority of Americans have relatively simple and straight-forward returns," she added.

Bipartisan reform legislation advancing through Congress – The Taxpayers First Act – contains a provision that would prevent the IRS from creating free tax preparation software to compete with private sector offerings from companies like TurboTax.

[...]

Currently, the IRS offers a service called Free File for certain qualifying, lower-income taxpayers. It offers this service through authorized third-party providers, including companies like H&R Block.

Ocasio-Cortez’s idea is not necessarily a new one.

Austin Goolsbee, a former economist in the Obama administration, proposed the idea of a "simple return” more than a decade ago. Since the IRS is asking the majority of people to copy information it already has onto forms and then submit it, the "simple return” would have the IRS send the taxpayer the documents with pre-filled information. It was a voluntary program designed to save taxpayers who opted into the program both time and money.

Austin (I think it's spelled "Austan") Goolsbee -- have you seen and heard him on Fox News? He's the guy who's wrong about EVERYTHING! And he certainly seems to be here too. I have to say I kind of feel sorry for the guy. With a name like that, he probably had neighborhood kids stealing the newspapers he'd just delivered off the porches he'd thrown them on. Do you think HE'D use this program?

Now, maybe it's just the late hour, dear readers, but I can't shake the idea that this is a classic "fox, guard the henhouse for me, will you" idea? But we're getting used to seeing the Democrats come up with this kind of thing. I DO hope our savvy American voters keep this kind of scheme in mind when we go to the polls on Election Day 2020!

Think about it. If the IRS were required to prepare our taxes, how much additional man- (or woman-) power would they need? Go ahead, Democrats, just grow the darn government. I'd rather see the Border Patrol expanded, and shrink the blasted IRS.

2 What a dope. If she's concerned about this why doesn't she support a flat tax?  Most people would use a form as long as an index card.  But she will never give up the progressive part of a "heavy, progressive income tax" that Marx said was necessary to give the world Communism.

3 What's really sad is that the twit doesn't know we already HAVE a "progressive income tax." People with high incomes -- IF they actually pay taxes on that income (which is another ballgame) -- pay more income tax than, say, Timothy, Jack and I pay.
And all this yadda yadda about "the rich don't pay their fair share: oh yes they do, although isn't it funny that leftists are totally unable to say what that "fair share" should be? If the rich actually started paying "their fair share," tax receipts in this country would nose-dive. Because WHY is it "fair" that Warren Buffet, for example, should be assessed a higher tax rate than I am?

4 Couldn't agree more, Dana.  I doubt AOC knows how the tax structure works. And no doubt she doesn't understand the difference between tax rates and amount of taxes paid. She is one stupid woman.
