I'm not so sure he supports this red flag stuff. I thinking he was making Feinstein quiet down and play nice. "Promise her anything but give her Arpeg," as the old ad slogan said.

We know Trump does things that way. I, too, wouldn't risk it. But Trump is a pragmatist and not an ideologue (which is the root of a lot of his troubles); he doesn't have any litmus tests so he winds up with these people who knife him in the back, people who are also "pragmatists" and jump ship. I am mindful of The Godfather Part II where, after an assassination attempt on him, Michael Corleone says "all of our people are businessmen.All of their loyalty is based on that. On that basis anything is possible". Sadly, Trump's people are "all businessmen" and their loyalty can be corrupted. Trump never really has grasped the need for True Believers in politics.
He always seems to think he can make a deal with the devils here.
