The gas company here in St. Louis is called Spire, and it is a successor to Laclede Gas. I despised Laclede gas ever since they shut my gas service off three years after I set it up, claiming service had never been set up despite the fact I had bills going back to the beginning - and the canceled checks to prove it. Eventually they turned it back on but it took two weeks and a huge amount of fighting with those jerks.
I had hopes Spire would be different. Silly me.
I received a letter in the spring that the company needed to do a meter check and I set it up. The technician was supposed to call first. I received no call and waited by the door until it was almost noon - the cutoff. I went to look outside and found a door tag saying "sorry we missed you" and "nobody was home". I was enraged; I had cleared my schedule for the day and this creep just tiptoed up to the door and stuck the tag on because he wanted to get finished early.
After raising hell with them they sent another man out on a different day and he checked the meter "all's clear" and told me I wouldn't see them for three years.
But I kept getting notices from Spire about a meter check. I called once and was told to disregard them.
Well, lo and behold, I found a door tag on my door yesterday threatening to shut the gas off. I called immediately and they told me they needed to change the meter. I told them what they technician had said and they replies "that was just a safety check; you have to get a new meter".
I know what they are doing; they are coming into compliance with U.N. Agenda 21 and installing a smart meter, which will allow them to throttle back my gas usage if they choose. This idiocy is still moving forward despite Trump.
At any rate I called the number and set up a meter change in November.
Last night I just ate leftovers and didn't use the stove so was unaware of what they had done.
This morning I ttook my shower and the water was only tepid. I was puzzled. I came down to make a cup of tea and found the stove was off.
Yes, they had shut my gas off.
I cannot put into writing the language coming from my mouth at that point. If someone told me I was speaking in tongues I would believe him.
I do feel sort of bad as I reamed out the customer service rep, who kept his cool and didn't hang up on me (Laclede gas would have). I know it's not his fault (and told him so after I calmed a bit) but this is absolutely unacceptable. I pay my bill promptly every month.
Now I have to drop everything and wait around tomorrow to see if this guy is going to show up to turn the gas back on. He has to gain access to the house so I can't just let him do it. I have too much to do; my wife is stillin the skilled care place and my father is in the hospital now and I do not have the time to waste on these idiots.
I've been angry with Spire for months now because for the last two years they have been replacing underground pipes and have torn up ALL the streets in my neighborhood. Traffic is a nightmare and there are always large trucks blocking the roads. Instead of doing it one street at a time they tore up the entire area and are now taking their good sweet time putting it back together.
(BTW, speaking of Agenda 21/30 they are putting large islands in the main streat and widening sidewalks and putting in bike lanes - all straight out of the environmentalist wacko, gang-green agenda.)
So I am forced to sit around waiting for our overlords to come and install a new meter despite the old one being perfectly acceptable. A pox upon them!
I wonder if I could sue in small claims court? I have no actual damages but certainly they deserve to pay out punitive. They shouldn't be able to pull this sort of thing.
The next time I have to replace my furnace or stove I'm switching to electric.

Believe me - I've played all those cards and got the cold shoulder (since my water heater is off quite literally as well as figuratively). They follow procedure.
I'm going to have to file a complaint with the Public Service Commission in Missouri and perhaps call my state rep.
When I have time and money I'm going to replace my furnace with electric - and the stove, and water heater. Fire these jerks.
Today my brother came into town and my other brother (Brian) has a birthday so we are going out this evening to eat. But I can't even take a shower unless they turn the gas back on, not unless I want my family jewels to shrivel up into my body.
A pox upon every one off them!

Personally, I much prefer your idea of calling your state rep (if he's a Republican) and call the Public Service Commission. I would hope that you have already done both of these things, as opposed to sitting around thinking about it -- although it sounds to me as though you have NOT. What the hell are you waiting for?
